Introduction


The BACA Portfolio Preparation Workshops offer a great opportunity for young learners to expand their knowledge on Western art and culture. Through a series of short courses, students will explore full aspects of portfolio preparation, including research, experiments, conceptual development and implementation. Moreover, this programme sets students ready for application to further education.

Goal

 
At the end of the course, students will develop and complete a series of individual projects under the guidance of the professional teaching group. The end products demonstrate ones’ understanding of art and design as well as their technical skills during their application to A Level courses at BACA or other art institute. Moreover, this programme introduces a systemic method of art design and research that will benefit students in the long run. In the past 6 years, BACA has been able to reach an admission rate of 98% for application to UAL undergraduate degree, while maintain a 100% rate for further education at other art institute.

Qualified Applicant

 
Student aged between 15 to 20 years old, with an interest in A Level courses and foundation study at BACA, as well as preoperational and undergraduate study at UAL.

Major Direction

 
Students may choose different pathways upon finishing this programme, including:
- 3D Pathway: Architecture, Interior and Spatial Design, Theatre Design, Special Effects, Jewelry Design, Product Design, etc.
-Communication Pathway: Graphic Communication Design, Photography, Illustration, Game Design, Film, etc. -Fine Art Pathway: Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture,
Fine Art Digital, Book Arts, Sound Arts, etc.
-Fashion Pathway: Fashion Design and Development Menswear, Womenswear, Textile Design (Print/Knitwear), Fashion Pattern Cutting, Sportswear, Bespoke Tailoring, Fashion Bags and Accessories, Fashion Footwear, Costume Design.

Teaching Group


The teaching group includes: visiting professors/lecturers from ual, BACA teaching team, graduate students from top art institute. The teaching group is well familiar with qualification standards, portfolio requirements and all other essential features of an application, as well as the Western mode of art education.

1. Introduction to Drawing

Who Should Apply: Students with no/little experience in drawing and hope to receive technical training for further education.

Content: This course is designed for students with little prior experience in drawing and how to improve one5 s basic drawing skills for further education. Different from conventional drawing classes, this course not only focuses on skill training, it also studies the conversion from ideas to visual language on a conceptual level. Furthermore, this course is designated for Chinese students to develop a more t horough understanding of the Western art culture and research. Through analytical research on contemporary works of art and practice training, students will end up with a broader and more professional view on art and design.

2.4 Week Art and Design Workshop

Who Should Apply: Students applying for A-Level courses and with some experience in art and design.

Content: This course is designed for students with some experience in drawing and hope to develop a more professional understanding of art and design through a systematic art training. Not only does it provide basic skill training and research guidance, but it also helps students develop a more thoughtful and sophisticated portfolio for further education. Students will have the chance to learn and use different techniques on various subjects, including collage, printmaking, watercolour, comprehensive sketching, figure drawing, model making, blue print, book art, etc. Through a series of experiments with materials and techniques, students will establish a more solid basis for future education.

3. Innovative Thinking and Portfolio Preparation Workshop

Who Should Apply: High school students applying for foundation or undergraduate courses at ual and other art institute.

Content: Based on innovation courses at ual, this course is designed for students to study and explore the process of portfolio preparation with innovative thinking. During the 3 to 4 month course, each student will have the chance to design, discuss and develop one’ s research project under the guidance of professionals. Also, group meeting will broaden students’ view on art and design through analytical thinking and critical discussion.

4. Jewelry Design Workshop

Who Should Apply: High school students applying for jewelry design oriented foundation or undergraduate courses.
Course Schedule: One day per week, five weeks total.

Content: During the course, students will get familiar with jewelry making appliances and receive basic jewelry making technical training, such as welding. Students are required to design and finish a piece jewelry product, such as a ring, a ring brooch or a necklace, at the end of the course. Also, this course can be taken as a supplementary course to the Innovative Thinking and Portfolio Preparation Workshop.

5. Pattern-making Workshop

fashion design oriented foundation or undergraduate
courses.

Content: Pattern-making as one of the most essential segments、 of fashion design, is also one of the indispensable qualities of becoming a successful fashion designer. It not only displays an indication of one5 s practical ability. Pattern-making ability is usually a decisive point in most application to fashion design courses. Therefore, pattern-making is one fundamental skill that a fashion student should equip with. This course can be taken as a supplementary course to the Innovative Thinking and Portfolio Preparation Workshop.

6. Garment Draping Workshop

Course Schedule: Four days per week, five weeks total; five days per week during winter/summer break.

Content: Garment Draping is one unique and direct way for designers to visualize ideas and look for inspirations. The course director, Miss Yuxi Chen, is an outstanding graduate from the fashion design major at Central Saint Martins. Using the course structure of fashion pathway at Central Saint Martins as a reference, the garment draping workshop is designated for students who hope to explore innovative ideas and design methods. This course can be taken as a supplementary course to the Innovative Thinking and Portfolio Preparation Workshop.

7. Fashion Illustration Workshop

Who Should Apply: High school students applying for fashion design oriented foundation or undergraduate courses.
Course Schedule: One day per week, five weeks total; five days per week during winter/summer break.

Content: Fashion illustration is one essential tool for designers to visualize ideas.
A successful fashion designer must also be an excellent fashion illustrator. The fashion illustration course provides basic skill training as a fashion illustrator and also fosters students' confidence as fashion designers. Fashion illustration, which is based upon but is more than illustration, allows students to demonstrate ideas in a more innovative way. This course can be taken as a supplementary course to the Innovative Thinking and Portfolio Preparation Workshop.
